New hot tub and deck
After 20 years of (almost) faithful service the redwood deck would finally hold water no longer. The last 3 or 4 summers had required judicious use of 3M 5200 sealant to get it to hold water, and finally the battle was lost. Here's the original tub:

I'd been scheming to move the tub off the deck, both to increase the size of the deck and also to get a better view and more remote location for the new tub. The new tub would go where the old hot tub heater, pump and filter used to live (the pile of stuff is the old tub equipment as well as a bunch of other stuff that was kicking around the yard at the time):

I did some drawings of what the deck would be, and the end result is surprisingly similar to the original drawings (though prior drawings did not prevent making modifications as the construction went along:

After clearing out brush (including 7' tall rosemary bushes), it turned out that the old concrete pad for the original hot tub equipment was perfect for the new tub--in size, location, and sturdiness of construction. So the pad was reused and the tub and deck built around it. In the photo below, the pad is original, but you can see the footings for the new deck have already been poured and some trenches for plumbing and electrical wiring are dug. The propane tank is in its original precarious position--the tank rested on two concrete pads which were in the process of falling down the hill.

Lots of re-figuring and plotting were involved, and demoing the old tub and equipment created a sizeable trash heap:
